Charles Lwanga Choir & Other Choirs

Our parish is blessed with the gift of music, led by several choir groups. The umbrella term “Charles Lwanga Choir” refers to the main adult choir that sings at the 10:00 AM Mass and major events. They practice twice a week and have a wide repertoire of hymns and songs in Swahili, English, Latin, and local languages. Their harmonious voices truly lift our liturgies, helping the congregation to pray twice through singing. They have composed original songs including a lovely Jumuiya anthem that each SCC uses. The choir also plays a role in evangelization – they occasionally stage gospel concerts or join diocesan choir competitions, where they have won accolades (most recently for a Kenyan Catholic liturgical music festival in 2024).

In addition to the main choir, we have a Youth Choir (for the 8:30 AM Mass) featuring younger instruments like guitars and keyboard – bringing a more contemporary praise vibe while still reverent. There’s also a small Children’s Choir (largely PMC kids) that will sing for occasions like Christmas play or First Communion day. During big feasts, all choirs often combine to form one grand choir, with up to 50 voices – a real foretaste of heaven!

The choirs don’t just sing; they also lead the parish in times of prayer through music. For instance, they host Taizé prayer evenings (meditative chant) occasionally and definitely animate the parish Way of the Cross with soulful laments. The ministry of music is open to anyone with talent or just willingness to learn – the choir is a family where members support each other, even outside church (they’ll show up to sing at a member’s wedding, or console at a funeral). True to their patron St. Cecilia’s spirit, they illustrate that music is a path to glorify God and touch hearts. We often say at Muyeye, “when you sing in choir, you’re preaching twice.” New members are always welcome – come join the melodious journey!
