Youth Group (Vijana wa Parokia)

Our Parish Youth Group is a lively fellowship of young Catholics (generally ages 16–35) who come together to deepen their relationship with Christ and find a peer community of faith. The Youth Group meets every Saturday afternoon for activities that range from Bible sharing and catechesis to sports, music practice, and discussions on life issues (career, relationships, etc.). On Sundays, the youth animate the 8:30 AM Youth Mass – serving as lectors, choir members, and ushers, making the liturgy truly by and for the youth.

The Youth Group isn’t just about internal activities; they are leaders in service and outreach. They frequently volunteer for parish projects such as cleaning the church, assisting in fundraising events, and teaching catechism to younger children. In the community, they have organized visits to Malindi Sub-County Hospital’s children ward, street clean-up campaigns, and tree planting events (especially during the annual Season of Creation in September). The youth also represent the parish in diocesan and national events – e.g., attending World Youth Day when possible, or national youth pilgrimages and rallies.

A key part of our youth ministry is the Magis Group – an Ignatian-inspired youth movement (Magis means “more” in Latin, reflecting the Jesuit ethos of doing more for Christ). The Magis group, currently ~20 active members, meets twice a month for deeper spiritual formation, leadership training, and planning of special youth-led liturgies or retreats. They’ve initiated creative projects, like a youth magazine/blog, and help plan the annual Youth Day celebration in the parish (feast of Christ the King, often, or a patron chosen by them like Bl. Pedro Arrupe). Many of our parish youth testify that being in the group keeps them grounded in faith amid societal pressures. They find wholesome friendship and a sense of purpose – truly, as their motto says, “Youth for Christ and Church.”
