Catholic Women Association (CWA)

The Catholic Women Association, affectionately known as “Wanawake Wakatoliki,” unites women in the parish to grow spiritually and to serve the Church and society. The CWA is one of the most dynamic groups, with membership cutting across age and background – from young mothers to grandmothers. Through prayer meetings, Bible study sessions, and workshops, CWA empowers women to deepen their faith and knowledge of Church teachings. They emphasize the role of women as nurturers of faith in the family and community, much like St. Monica (their patron, often nicknamed the “Battalion of St. Monica” for their fervent prayers). CWA members practice various works of mercy: they feed the hungry (often organizing parish charity collections), visit orphans and the sick, and mentor young women in virtues of purity and resilience. They also actively address issues like poverty, education for girls, and family well-being in the community – for instance, by running a small microfinance table-banking group to help women start small businesses, or campaigning against domestic violence.

The CWA is highly visible in parish events – in their distinctive blue/white attire on Sundays – singing in the mothers’ choir, decorating the altar, and ensuring hospitality at functions. Being part of CWA gives our women a sense of sisterhood and solidarity in facing life’s challenges. In September 2024, our parish hosted a deanery CWA Mass where 80 women were formally received (bloused) into CWA by Bishop Lagho[14]. It was a day of grace and joy, and the bishop encouraged them to let their faith be the “main stem” that nourishes all their activities[15]. We are proud of our CWA and pray that, like Mary our Mother, their faith and love continue to magnify the Lord.
