Our parish extends its pastoral care beyond the immediate vicinity of Muyeye through two outstation communities:
- St. Francis of Assisi Outstation – Msoloni: Located in Msoloni village (about 15 km from the parish center), this outstation has an established small church building. It is under the day-to-day care of Sr. Mary Nzisa, FSA (as noted above) with regular visits by our priests. Mass is celebrated here at least twice a month (often on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon) to ensure the roughly 150 Catholics in the area have access to the Eucharist. On other weeks, Sr. Mary or catechists lead a Liturgy of the Word and distribute Holy Communion. The simple chapel, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, was built with community effort and reflects the humble faith of the people. The community faces economic challenges – many are subsistence farmers or laborers – but they are rich in faith and hospitality. Catechism classes and SCC meetings occur at this outstation as well. One of the pressing needs is transport for children who must travel to the main parish for certain programs or to nearby Catholic schools. We hope to empower this community further by possibly establishing a small Catholic nursery school there in the future and expanding the chapel as it is often overflowing on big feasts.
- St. Josephine Bakhita Outstation – Mayungu: Situated near the Mayungu beach area, this outstation is still in its developing stage. Currently, there is no permanent church structure or land owned by the Church in Mayungu – this is a significant challenge. Masses and services here often take place in a faithful family’s compound or a temporary shelter. The community (around 100 Catholics and growing) is under the patronage of St. Josephine Bakhita, a saint who knew hardship. Appropriately, this community has persevered in faith despite not having a physical church. They gather weekly for rosary and Scripture, and a priest comes about once a month to celebrate Mass (often timing it with a weekday evening or a Saturday, due to our own limited clergy and lack of a venue). A top priority is to secure a piece of land in Mayungu to build a chapel and social hall. The parish and diocese are actively looking for affordable land. Once obtained, we plan a modest church construction so that these believers can worship in a dignified space. Despite setbacks, the Mayungu faithful are very enthusiastic – they participate in parish events (like coming to Muyeye for Feast Day or special seminars) and have strong devotion. Their celebration of St. Bakhita’s feast on Feb 8 each year is a moving occasion of unity and hope (see Blog for a story on the 2025 celebration).
Both outstations illustrate our commitment to “leave no one behind” in evangelization. They help bring the Sacraments closer to those who live far from the main parish. Our priests and pastoral team travel to these communities, often over rough roads, as part of their Jesuit missionary mandate to reach the peripheries. In turn, the outstations enliven the whole parish with their unique gifts – for instance, the Msoloni choir and traditional dancers sometimes perform at the parish during joint events, enriching us all with local culture.
We foresee establishing new outstations as well, since Malindi’s outskirts are expanding. Areas like Kadongoleni/Kakuyuni (where some parishioners come from) might benefit from a future Catholic presence. Wherever there are pockets of Catholics too distant to attend Sunday Mass in Muyeye, we aim to organize them into a Jumuiya and eventually into an outstation with the bishop’s approval. This missionary outreach is at the heart of our Jesuit parish identity – to go where the need is greatest.(For current schedules of outstation Masses or if you reside in those areas and wish to connect with the local Catholic community, please contact us for up-to-date information.)
